This class adopts a womanist framework whose goal is to introduce students to Black feminism and womanism as a vehicle through which they can fully address the particular standpoints of Black women and work to create substantive, sustainable change in the world. Black feminist/womanist praxis enables women of color to simultaneously respond to all of the ways in which we are oppressed and to celebrate the ways in which we thrive. It also stands as a movement to counter oppression wherever we find it and works to bring about a more just and peaceful world. While the course is grounded in the experiences and perspectives of Black women specifically and women of color more broadly, it asserts that all people – regardless of race or gender—who are committed to social, political and economic justice—are necessary coalition & collective partners.
