Course Description
Tests of engineering materials in tension, compression, bending, and torsion; verification by the experiment of basic theories learned in the strength of materials
Student Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate an ability:
- To conduct experiments for a given purpose
- To operate data acquisition systems and various types of material testing machines
- To analyze the stress-strain curve for modulus, yield, strength, toughness, and resilience
- To analyze experimental data and develop empirical equations
- To work individually and in a team
- To communicate in the written report and oral presentation
Course Outline
This course is to be conducted entirely online, Canvas + Zoom, https://canvas.calstatela.edu/, and a minimum of 3 hours work outside of the class.
- The class will be divided into five (5) teams of two (2) or three (3) members.
- Team Experiment: three (3) at-home experiments using at-home kit distributed by ME department
- performs an experiment individually at home and shares the data with other team members
- as a team, writes a team report using all members’ data
- prepares a presentation file and present in class
- Individual Experiments: six (4) online experiments, data analysis using data provided on Canvas
- searches videos related to an experiment and post the link of the best video on Canvas forum
- votes for the best video
- writes a report using data provided by the instructor
-
Post one comment in the ‘the Muddiest Point’ on Canvas per experiment
- Actively participate graded/ungraded quizzes, discussions, and surveys
